Associated Chakra: Muladhara / Root Chakra

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine. Grounding us to the physical plane, the central focus of this chakra is our survival and safety. This chakra, associated with the adrenal glands, assimilates energy for our physical foundation, survival and wellbeing: the skeletal system, blood, large intestines, legs and feet are nourished by the root chakra.

Over activity of this chakra can make us aggressive, selfish and pushy. We become over-attached to the material realm and bogged-down in literal perceptions of reality. We may be prone to obesity, greed, laziness and fixated on the accumulation of material wealth.

An underactive root chakra can cause feelings of inadequacy, disillusionment and depression. Being ungrounded, undisciplined, insecure, fearful, energy-less and disorganized also point towards an underactive root chakra. A sense of being disconnected from the body, ‘poverty consciousness’ and the inability to set and maintain boundaries also indications that this chakra is deficient in energy.

When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel vital and alive and able to support ourselves. We are grounded and have a sense of safety and belonging on the Earth. We are able to manifest our dreams into reality and enjoy a sense of prosperity and the confidence that all our physical needs will be met.

As with the trees who depend upon a deep network of roots beneath the surface of the Earth to anchor and sustain them, so too are we nourished and sustained by our rootedness to the Earth.
